Body for Amendments to Nizam-e-Adal Regulation

The NWFP and federal governments’ joint committee for the imposition of shariah law in Malakand Division and Swat has proposed amendments to the Shari Nizam-e-Adl Regulation, 1999, NWFP Law Minister Barrister Arshad Abdullah told Daily Times on Tuesday.

The committee has added a clause of mediation in the 1999 regulation, he said, under which a jirga would act as mediator to resolve a dispute or a case between the parties within 15 days before filing of the case in a Qazi court.

The provincial law minister said that they had also proposed the federal government allocate funds for establishment of Peshawar High Court Malakand circuit bench for filing of appeals against Qazi courts’ verdicts.

Besides, he said, the committee has proposed extension of NWFP Shariah Act, 2003 to the Provincially Administered Tribal Areas (PATA) so as to implement shariah laws in the province as well as in PATA.
